French Open, Week One

A Week of Upsets

The first week of the French Open was marked by upsets, as many top-seeded players exited the tournament. Danil Medvedev of Russia was eliminated in the first round. Jannik Sinner went out in the second round to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo after he became ill from the heat when he was one game from victory. Novak Djokovic lost to Joao Fonseca of Brazil and Australia’s Alex de Minaur was also eliminated. Alexander Zverev of Germany and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada are the only top ten players remaining in the tournament. 

On the women’s side, Americans Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova also made early exits. Gauff lost to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova, while Anisimova went out to Diane Perry of France. 

Who to Watch on Week Two

American players advancing to the fourth round include Frances Tiafoe and unheralded Zachary Svajda on the men’s side and Madison Keys on the women’s side. In the absence of Jannik Sinner, three other Italians, Matteo Arnaldi, Matteo Berretini and Flavio Cobolli, made the fourth round. 

The Ukrainian women have a strong team, with Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk scoring victories. They will play one another in the quarterfinals. Marta Kostyuk defeated Iga Swiatek in straight sets, while Svitolina was victorious over Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in three sets. 

A strong South American presence has made itself felt on the men’s side, with Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina and Chile’s Alenjandro Tabilo all advancing to the fourth round.
