Cleveland (Women’s Tennis Association): Sorana Cirstea Wins Cleveland Title

Sorana Cirstea of Romania defeated Ann Li of the United States in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to win the Tennis in the Land championship in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland title is the third title of Cirstea’s career and her first since triumphing at Istanbul in 2021. Cirstea said:

“It has been a special week for me. I came here in hopes of playing good tennis with absolutely zero expectations. I have to give credit to my coach, Adrian. We used to work in the past and recently we got back together and, right away, we won a title. I’m very grateful.”

Cirstea had a perfect straight sets record in Cleveland, including a win over top-seeded Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in the quarterfinals, where she won 6-4, 6-1. It was Cirstea’s fourth win over a top ten opponent in 2025. Cirstea and Li now move on to the U.S. Open, where Cirstea will play against Solana Sierra of Argentina in the first round and Ann Li will take on Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia.

Winston-Salem (Association of Touring Professionals Men’s Championships): Marton Fucsovics Defeats Botic Van de Zandschulp

Marton Fucsovics of Hungary defeated Botic Van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 to win the Winston-Salem Open. The second set went to a tiebreak after Fucsovics squandered a match point with a double fault. He dominated the tiebreak 7-3 to win the title. Fucsovics said:

“I’m speechless, really. I had a long career, a couple of trophies. I’m 33 ½ years old. I belong to the older generation, but I’m still here, winning an ATP 250. So I will keep on fighting. I’m enjoying tennis right now. I’m going to play as long as I can.”

Fucsovics and Van de Zandschulp now head to the U.S. Open, where Fucsovics takes on Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the first round. Botic Van de Zandschulp will face Denmark’s Holger Rune in the opening round.

Monterrey, Mexico (Women’s): Diana Shnaider Defeats Compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova

Diana Shnaider defeated Russian compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 11 minutes to capture her second Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 500 title and fifth career title overall. She said:

“Thank you crowd for coming today and supporting us. The atmosphere was incredible. It was a pleasure to play. It was a pleasure to show high quality tennis and I hope you enjoyed this week in Monterrey.”

Shnaider won her first singles title of 2025 at Monterrey, adding it to her two doubles titles, one of which was the Miami 1000 Masters Series title. She begins her U.S. Open campaign against Laura Siegemund of Germany. Alexandrova will face Anastasija Sevastova in her opening round.
