Wimbledon, Week One

Written by Edda Bevilacqua

It has been an unusual first week at Wimbledon, a competition marked by early round exits and spectacular performances by seeded players. Among the top seeds who suffered early exits were Alexander Zverev of Germany, Danil Medvedev of Russia and Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the United States. Top seeds excelling at Wimbledon this year include Jannik Sinner of Italy, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Novak Djokovic of Serbia. All will be competing in the Round of 16 as the competition approaches its second week.

Italy is strongly represented at Wimbledon this year. In addition to number one ranked Jannik Sinner, two more players, Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Sonego, have made it to the Round of 16. The Americans also have a strong team, with Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton making it to the Round of 16 on the men’s side and Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova reaching that level on the women’s side.

Other top players making it to the Round of 16 include Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
