Ukraine: Two Killed in Russian Airstrike on Kyiv

Written by Edda Bevilacqua
Russia launched one of its largest airstrikes on Kyiv on July 20, 2025. The attack occurred just hours before the U.K. and Germany were to chair a meeting about U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to allow NATO allies to provide Ukraine with weapons. The strike killed two people and wounded fifteen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported. A drone struck the entrance to a subway station in Kyvi’s Shevchenkivskyi district. The station was engulfed in smoke. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said the station needed to be ventilated in “enhanced mode.”

U.S. President Donald Trump gave Moscow a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire a week before the attack. A coincidental “50-day drive” has been made in Europe to give Kyiv the weapons needed to fight Russia and to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that his officials have proposed a new round of peace talks. Istanbul is a proposed location for these talks, but a date has not yet been set.
