Trump to Speak with Putin to Negotiate End to War in Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Trump said, “A lot of work was done over the weekend and we’ll see if we have something to announce. Maybe by Tuesday. Maybe we can. Maybe we can’t, but I think we have a good chance.” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peshkov confirmed that the call had been made.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, in his nightly address to the Ukrainian people, “Russia stole almost another week-a week of war that only Russia wants.” He said that Ukraine is willing to do anything to end the war but stressed that the defense of his nation was key. He said,

“We must remember, as long as the occupier is on our land, and as long as air raid sirens sound, we must defend Ukraine.” Zelenskyy said that victory for Ukraine would mean taking back territory annexed by Russia, including the Crimea, taken by Russia in 2014. Putin said he would seek a total victory in the Kursk region, taken by Ukraine in the summer of 2024, by regaining every inch of that territory.

Trump concluded by talking about conditions of a ceasefire and the concessions both Russia and Ukraine would we willing to make:

“Well, I think we’ll be talking about land. It’s a lot different than it was before the wars. And we’ll be talking about land; we’ll be talking about power plants. That’s a big question, but I think we have a lot of it already discussed, very much, by both sides.”
