Jasmine Paolini Wins Women’s Singles and Doubles Titles

Jasmine Paolini of Italy defeated Coco Gauff of the United States in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to capture the BNL d’ Italia Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. Paolini, 29, is the oldest woman to win the title in the Open Era. Coco Gauff, 21, missed out on becoming the youngest to win the title since Serena Williams won it in 2002. 

Paolini also won the doubles title, pairing with compatriot Sara Errani to defeat Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Elise Mertens of Belgium in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Errani and Paolini described their Rome experience: “Two crazy and unforgettable weeks in Rome.” They said to the audience, “You are special.” It was the pair’s second consecutive doubles win in the Italian capital.

Carlos Alcaraz Wins Men’s Title

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated his main rival, Jannik Sinner of Italy, in straight sets 7-6, 6-1, to capture the men’s title in Rome. With his win, Alcaraz moves up to number two in the world behind Sinner, potentially setting up a showdown between the two top seeds at the French Open. The Rome Masters 1000 title is Alcaraz’ second title at that level in 2025, having also triumphed at Monte Carlo in April. 

Sinner had hoped to become the first Italian man to win at Rome since 1976, when Adriano Panatta accomplished that feat. However, Alcaraz was just too good. Overall, it was a successful two weeks for the Italian team, as Jasmine Paolini won both the singles and doubles, defeating American Coco Gauff in singles and pairing with Sara Errani to win the doubles title.
