Pope Leo XIV Sends Message of Peace for Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV sent a message of peace for Ukraine just as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to an immediate truce. He sent a general message of “peace” acknowledging the war in Ukraine and other conflicts in Gaza and Kashmir. He began his message with a call for “no more wars” and stated the conditions necessary to achieve peace. He called for “justice for the beloved Ukrainian people and the release of the hostages alongside relief for the exhausted civilian population of Gaza.”

Pope Leo XIV’s statements show an awareness of the greater difficulties involved in moving toward peace. His statements come at a crucial time in world diplomacy, in which positive steps are being made toward ending the war in Ukraine and unlocking deals in the Middle East and the Kashmir region of India and Pakistan.
