Written by Dana Wall-Oakley
Ethics are critical to the reputation and success of your business.  Read on for some principles, strategies and practices you can use to maintain ethics in public relations for your business.

Ethics in public relations refers to the principles and values that guide your actions and decisions in public relations for your business or company.  It involves promoting honesty, transparency, fairness, and responsibility in all aspects of communication and relationship-building with the public.  As a small business owner, adhering to key ethical principles in your public relations strategies is critical for building trust, credibility and reliability, as well as maintaining a positive reputation.  Here are a few key principles and strategies you can use to uphold ethics in public relations for your business:

  1. Ethical Principles – To promote a culture of ethical behavior for your business, you can follow these principles, among others.  In your interactions with team members, customers, clients, and colleagues, be honest and transparent.  Respect for Privacy means safeguarding the privacy and confidentiality of your team members, colleagues, and the public in general.  Be Accountable.  Take responsibility for your actions and decisions.  Avoid the appearance of impropriety.
  2. Ethical Strategies – Now that you have ethical principles in mind, what are some strategies you can use to employ them?  a) Transparency in communication – Provide truthful and accurate information at all times.  When you avoid misleading and deceptive practices, you engender trust, reliability, and credibility.  b) Respecting confidentiality and privacy – You can do this by avoiding disclosure of sensitive or personal information without consent.  c) Avoid conflicts of interest and promote diversity and inclusion.  Sometimes, just the appearance of unethical behavior can be damaging to your company’s reputation.  Avoid, and/or disclose, any potential conflicts of interest.   There are many more strategies to ensure that you are following ethical guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  3. Ethical Practices –  Ethics and Integrity go hand in hand.  Establish a clear code of ethics for your business.  When you have clear guidelines and transparent communication, you reduce conflict both internally and externally.  An important practice to implement is a system for reporting ethical concerns.   Have a written policy that clearly outlines procedures and policies in your business to report concerns  and ensure you have a designated individual who will manage the solutions to those concerns.  You will also want to regularly review and update your code of ethics as well as the related policies and procedures.  Continually evaluate their effectiveness and provide training and education to yourself and your team.

Ethics in public relations are essential for maintaining a company’s reputation and success.  Unethical practices can greatly damage a company’s reputation and lead to negative consequences.  Implementing ethical public relations practices, such as establishing a code of ethics and promoting diversity and inclusion, can help a company navigate crisis situations and maintain a positive image.  Ethical PR practices not only enhance the reputation of the organization but also contribute to the greater good of society.  If you need help figuring out the best way to implement ethics in your business public relation strategies or what your ethical stance in public relations is for your business, reach out to Classy Communications today. We can help. Contact us at www.ClassyCommunications.net.  And please follow us on LinkedIn at ClassyCommunications PR & Advertising.
