Australian Open, Week One

Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) and Coco Gauff (United States) Make Women’s Quarterfinals; Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) Sets Up Showdown with Novak Djokovic (Serbia) in Men’s Quarterfinals
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated Mirra Andreeva of Russia in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to make the quarterfinals of the 2025 Australian Open. She faces another Russian, Anastasia Pavlychenkova, in the quarterfinals. In the men’s competition, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic set up a blockbuster quarterfinal against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain. Both men are looking to make history. If Djokovic wins the Australian Open, it would be his 25th Major Championship, a record-breaking feat. If Alcaraz were to win, he would win a Career Slam. (Alcaraz already has a French Open, two Wimbledon and a U.S. Open title to his name). It would also be the first Australian Open title for Alcaraz.
American Representation at the Australian Open
The American field at the Australian Open is strong this year. Coco Gauff takes on Spain’s Paula Badosa in her quarterfinal match. Other notable American players include Ben Shelton, who takes on resurgent Frenchman Gael Monfils, who triumphed at Auckland in the runup to the Australian Open, and newcomer Learner Tien. Nineteen-year-old Tien is the son of Vietnamese immigrants and scored an outstanding victory over Danil Medvedev of Russia, who he defeated in five sets.
Other Notable Stories
Defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy takes on Denmark’s Holger Rune. Elina Svitolina of Ukraine made it to the quarterfinals, as did her husband, Gael Monfils. Svitolina takes on Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in her quarterfinal match. In what may be one of the most incredible stories of the Australian Open, “Lucky Loser” Eva Lys, who expected to go home after losing in her third round qualifying match, has made it to the Round of 16, where she takes on Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
Whatever happens in the second week, the Australian Open has proved to be an incredible competition.
