New Year, New Pet-What to Consider When Adopting a Pet
Written by Edda Bevilacqua
Are you considering adopting a pet into your family? Here are some important things to consider before adopting that new furry family member:
Do your research: What breed of dog (or cat) are you considering? Read about different breeds or go to your local shelter to gain information about various breeds. Mixed breeds are also good companions. If you are interested in a specific breed (eg. Labrador retrievers or Siamese cats), local rescue services can help you.
Ask questions: Go to your local Humane Society to get information about the animals and ask to spend time bonding with them.
Think about adopting an adult pet: Kittens and puppies may be too much work for some people to care for. Adult pets may already be housebroken and their personalities may already be formed.
Make preparations: Buy necessary items, such as leashes, litterboxes and toys. Teach children about the responsibilities of pet care.
Last, and most important, fall in love with your new pet: Bond with your pet, socialize your dog by taking it on walks and spend quality time with your new pet. Pet ownership has great benefits for people of all ages. Children who have pets experience unconditional love. Adults gain socialization by taking their dogs on walks and interacting with other pet owners, either in person or online via a breed-specific or general pet site.
If you are willing to commit to getting a pet, the benefits are great in terms of joy, unconditional love, better health and socialization.
