Rafael Nadal Defeated by Nuno Borges in Sweden

Written by Edda Bevilacqua

Nuno Borges of Portugal defeated Rafael Nadal of Spain to take the first title of his career in Sweden. Rafael Nadal fell short in his bid to win his first title since his French Open victory in 2022. He was defeated in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 by Nuno Borges of Portugal. Nadal scored several hard-fought three set victories en route to the final, but couldn’t find his form against Borges, who is ranked number 51 in the world. Borges said of his victory, “I don’t know what to say. I think I was wishing for this moment for a while. It was crazy tennis. It doesn’t happen when you expect it, sometimes.”

Rafael Nadal, by reaching the final, will rise to number 161 in the rankings. He will focus his attention on the Olympic Games in Paris, where he will play both singles and doubles. He will partner with 2024 French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in singles in Beijing and partnered with compatriot Marc Lopez in 2016 in Rio to win the gold medal in doubles.

Gstaad, Switzerland: Matteo Berrettini Wins Title Over Quentin Halys

Matteo Berrettini defeated Quentin Halys of France 6-3, 6-1 to take the title in Gstaad, Switzerland. Berrettini took just 59 minutes to win the match. He said, “It feels unbelievable. It feels like it was yesterday that I won my first title here six years ago, but a lot of matches and a lot of things happened.” He won his second title of 2024, having also won at Marrakech in April. Berrettini moves back into the top 50 with this title.
