Rafael Nadal Retires in Low-Key Farewell Ceremony

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Major Champion, retired following Spain’s Davis Cup quarterfinal loss to the Netherlands. (The Netherlands would finish runner-up to Italy, led in its title defense by Jannik Sinner). The retirement ceremony was criticized by some as being too low-key, but this is exactly how Rafael Nadal had wanted it. A video tribute to Rafael Nadal, showing highlights of his performances over the years, was featured, along with tributes by his greatest rivals Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Serena Williams also paid tribute to Nadal. 

International Tennis Federation (ITF) President David Haggerty said: “Rafa is an amazing player and has a legacy of tennis that he will leave behind. We felt it was very important to listen to what Rafa wanted and how he wanted to be celebrated. That’s exactly what we did.” Fellow Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez also defended the tribute. He said, “We should focus, all of us, on the fact that Rafa chose Davis Cup to be the final tournament of his career, instead of talking about his farewell ceremony. Honestly, we did our best.”

Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni Nadal and fellow Spanish player David Ferrer criticized the ceremony, contending it was too low key. However, for Rafael Nadal, it was perfect. He is a humble champion and a great player. His farewell at Davis Cup was a fitting tribute. He is a great player, a true Spaniard and a loving man. Enhorabuena (Congratulations), Rafa!
