Montreal Masters 1000: Alexei Popyrin Defeats Andrey Rublev for Title

Alexei Popyrin of Australia defeated Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the final of the Montreal Masters 1000 tournament 6-2, 6-4 to become the fourth Australian player to win a Masters 1000 tournament. Popyrin said, “It means the world, for all the hard work I’ve put in over the years, all the sacrifices I have made.” With this victory, Popyrin moves from Number 62 in the world to Number 23. He has become the first player to win the Canadian Open on his first attempt as a main draw player since Novak Djokovic achieved the feat in 2007.

Popyrin joins Pat Rafter, Mark Philippoussis and Lleyton Hewitt on the list of Australian players to win Masters 1000 titles.

Toronto: Jessica Pegula Wins Second Straight Title

Jessica Pegula of the United States defeated fellow American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to capture her second straight National Bank Open title in Toronto. She became the second woman to defend the title since Martina Hingis won in 2000. Pegula said, “So excited to be here with the trophy again. I really wanted this one. I know everyone is talking about my record, but it’s nice to be able to get through the week and back it up.”

Anisimova defeated three top 20 players, including Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, to make the final. She said, “I really thought I had it there after the second set, but she really stepped it up.” Anisimova will rise to Number 49 in the rankings following her runner-up finish in Toronto.
