Rafael Nadal Announces Retirement
Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, has announced his retirement. He will officially retire following the Davis Cup Championship in November. Nadal said, “The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two, especially.” The 38-year-old Spaniard has suffered multiple injuries throughout his career.
Rafael Nadal has an impressive record, winning a total of 22 Major Championships, 14 of which were at the French Open alone. (He has also won two Australian Open titles, two Wimbledon titles and four U.S. Open titles). His career record puts him only behind Novak Djokovic, with 24 Major Championships and ahead of Roger Federer, who won 20.
Nadal gave credit to his rivals, Djokovic and Federer: “I want to thank the entire tennis industry, all the people involved in this sport, my long-time colleagues, especially my great rivals. I have spent many, many hours with them and I have lived many moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
The Davis Cup will be held in Malaga, Spain, from November 19-24, 2024. Spain will face the Netherlands, with Rafael Nadal taking on Botic Von de Zandschulp in his first singles match at Malaga.
Shanghai: Jannik Sinner Takes Title Over Novak Djokovic
Jannik Sinner of Italy defeated Serbian legend Novak Djokovic to capture the Shanghai Masters Tournament, depriving Djokovic of his 100th career title. Sinner defeated Djokovic in straight sets 7-6, 6-3. He won the tournament in impressive style without facing a single break point throughout the entire match. Sinner joins Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev on the list of players to accomplish this feat.
Additionally, Jannik Sinner has secured his place as the year-end Number One in 2024. Sinner said of his match against Djokovic: “It was a very tough match, obviously; playing against Novak is one of the toughest challenges we have. I’m very happy with how I handled the situation. It’s tough to tell you a secret about Djokovic because he doesn’t have any weaknesses. You have to try and use the small chances that he gives you, but there are not many during the match. He is a legend of our sport. He’s very tough to play against, so I’m very happy.”
Jannik Sinner has won a total of seven titles this year, triumphing at the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Miami, Halle, Cincinnati, the U.S. Open and now, Shanghai. His career record is an impressive 17 titles.
Wuhan: Aryna Sabalenka Wins Wuhan Title Over Home Favorite Zheng Qinwen
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated China’s Zheng Qinwen in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in a hard-fought match lasting two hours and 40 minutes. Sabalenka now has a 4-0 winning record over Zheng and has extended her winning streak at Wuhan to an impressive seventeen matches. She has now won the Wuhan title three times, adding to the titles she captured in 2018 and 2019. In doing so, Sabalenka joins Serena Williams in winning a Masters 1000 tournament three times. Williams won the Miami tournament three times between 2013-2015.
Sabalenka said of her hard-fought victory against home favorite Zheng: “I wouldn’t say that she (Zheng) did something differently. I would say that I just played against myself, but I’m really happy I was able to put everything together in the third set and get this win.”
