Do Cats Experience Separation Anxiety?

Written by Edda Bevilacqua

Separation anxiety is commonly thought to occur more often with dogs than with cats, but our feline friends can also have it. Cats form strong bonds with a single person and can become anxious when that person is away from home. Signs of separation anxiety in cats can include destructive behaviors (although this is more common with dogs), excessive meowing and a change in litterbox habits.

Breeds most likely to experience separation anxiety include Asian breeds such as the Siamese, Burmese and Tonkinese. These breeds are very social and affectionate, forming attachments with a favorite person. Athletic breeds such as the Abyssinian need an environment full of play and socialization to thrive.

Cats of any breed adopted from a shelter require time and socialization to form trust with their owners and can become anxious when left alone. They need love and affection to grow into loving companions.
