Spanish Tennis Player Objects to Nadal’s Protected Ranking

Spanish tennis player Pedro Martinez objected to the protected ranking system that would allow Rafael Nadal to play at the Olympic Games despite his almost yearlong absence due to injury. Nadal’s protected ranking means that Martinez would likely be left off Spain’s Olympic tennis team. The team will be made up of Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Pablo Carreno-Busta and Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina.

Martinez said that even though, as a fan of tennis, he would like to see Rafael Nadal play, he said the protected ranking system was unfair: “The protected ranking is an injustice in this case neither of us has missed the Olympics due to being injured.” Martinez called the issue of fairness into question when deciding on the Olympic team.
