Tokyo: Arthur Fils Wins All-French Final Against Ugo Humbert

Twenty-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils defeated his compatriot Ugo Humbert in three sets, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3. Fils won in impressive style, saving championship point on the way to victory. He said, “I was feeling, honestly, dead on court, and said of Humbert, “He’s such a great champion-he was very tough.” Humbert came into the Tokyo final with an impressive record, winning two titles this season and losing just one set in six finals. Humbert won the first set at Tokyo as well, but Fils scored a comeback win.

Fils defeated impressive competition in Tokyo, defeating two Americans, Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Holger Rune of Denmark to set up an all-French final. Fils said of his victory: I’m very happy with the tennis I’m producing. I’m working a lot. It’s better and better. I still have to improve, but it’s cool.”

Beijing: Carlos Alcaraz Wins Beijing Open Over Jannik Sinner

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner of Italy to capture the Beijing Open title in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. He ended Sinner’s fifteen match winning streak in an amazing 3 hour, 21-minute match. Alcaraz now has a 6-4 head-to-head record over Sinner.

Alcaraz earned his Beijing title following his second-round loss at the U.S. Open, which was won by Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz lost the first set at Beijing after being up 5-2, but he came back to win the next two sets, dominating the third-set tiebreak. He said, “I had my chances in the first set, but didn’t make it but, in general, I’m proud of myself the way I dealt with the match, the way that I managed everything.”

Beijing Women’s Final: Coco Gauff Wins in Straight Sets Over Karolina Muchova

Coco Gauff of the United States defeated Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 to win the women’s title at Beijing, her second title of 2024 and the eighth of her career. Gauff has now defeated Muchova in all three of their head-to-head meetings.

Gauff told Muchova, who came back from a wrist injury, “It’s great to see you back on court. You’re such an amazing player and hopefully we play many more finals.” Gauff’s mother was present   at the Beijing Masters’ 1000 tournament to watch her daughter win her biggest title since capturing the U.S. Open.

Gauff completed the first set in 29 minutes. Muchova defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in the quarterfinals and China’s Zheng Qinwen, the Olympic champion, in the semifinals to set up the contest with Coco Gauff. She initially went up 2-0 in the second set, but Gauff came back to win in straight sets.
