Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke out against the latest assassination attempt against former United States President and current Presidential candidate Donald Trump. Zelenskyy wrote on X: “It’s good that the suspect in the assassination attempt was apprehended quickly. This is our principle: the rule of law is paramount and political violence has no place anywhere in the world.”
The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested near the Florida golf course where Trump was playing on Sunday, September 15. This came two months after the first assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Routh had expressed support for Ukraine in its war against Russia and had traveled to Ukraine in 2022. He was rejected for service in Ukraine, as he had no ties to its military. Ukraine’s Foreign Legion categorized Routh’s attitude as “delusional.”
The Kremlin stated that the assassination attempt was a sign that the political conflict was “intensifying.” Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “We can see how tense the situation is there, including between political rivals. We are watching it closely, but we have never interfered in this in any way and we are not interfering now.”
