Barbora Krejcikova Wins Women’s Wimbledon Title

Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to take her second Major Championship title. Three years ago, she won the French Open as an unseeded player. Now, at age 28, she has added a Wimbledon title. Krejcikova said, “It’s just unreal what happened. Definitely the best day of my tennis career-and also the best day of my life.” She paid tribute to her mentor, the late Jana Novotna, who won Wimbledon in 1998.

Krejcikova is the eighth different women’s Wimbledon champion in eight years. Jasmine Paolini made the final at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, finishing runner-up in both.

Carlos Alcaraz Defends Wimbledon Title

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 to defend his Wimbledon title. It was Alcaraz’ fourth career title and second Wimbledon victory. He said, “In an interview when I was eleven years old, I said that my dream was to win Wimbledon. So I’m repeating the dream.”

Djokovic was looking to make history as the only player to win 25 Major championships. He and Margaret Court-Smith both have 24. Instead, it was Carlos Alcaraz who made history by becoming the third youngest man, behind Mats Wilander and Bjorn Borg, to win four Major titles. He also equaled Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal by winning the French Open and Wimbledon the same year.

Alcaraz said of his win, “It is a great feeling even thinking about being the French Open and Wimbledon Champion the same year and that few players had done it before. It’s unbelievable.”
