Ukraine “Too Corrupt” to Join NATO

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was told his country was “too corrupt” to join NATO. The organization expressed support for Ukraine’s inclusion, but said more needed to be done to improve its domestic situation. While a U.S. official praised Ukraine’s reforms over the last two years, he said more needed to be done: “We have to step back and applaud everything that Ukraine has done in the name of reforms over the last two-plus years. As they continue to make these reforms, we want to commend them, as we want to talk about additional steps that need to be taken, particularly in the area of anti-corruption.”

The defense alliance will gather on July 9. Further requirements for Ukraine’s entry into NATO will be discussed.
