Written by Edda Bevilacqua

Defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, along with Iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner and Rafael Nadal, have advanced to the second week of the Madrid Open tennis tournament. Alcaraz defeated Kazakstan’s Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, while Sabalenka outlasted Poland’s Magda Linette 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Alcaraz returned to competition after injury forced him to miss both Monte Carlo and Barcelona. He said, “It’s been quite a tough month for me, with the uncertainty over when I’d be back.”

Aryna Sabalenka said of her three-set victory over Magda Linette, “I think in that second set, she just put a little pressure on my serve, and I just didn’t handle my emotions well.”

Rafael Nadal and Elena Rybakina also emerged as winners during the first week of competition. Nadal evened the score with Australia’s Alex De Minaur, defeating him in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. He plays Pedro Cachin of Argentina in the third round.
