The Power of Toastmasters: A Journey of Growth and Leadership

Written by Edda Bevilacqua

Jesse Oakley, III, International Director for Region 2 of Toastmasters International, shares his personal journey in Toastmasters. He started his Toastmasters career as a nineteen-year-old Civil Engineering student at UNLV. He attended a Speechcraft session at Star Masters Toastmasters in 2002. Jesse describes himself as an introvert who learned to become more outgoing by stepping outside his box. He took on different leadership opportunities both inside and outside of Toastmasters over the years, ranging from club offices to his current position as International Director for Region 2. He also works as a Red Cross volunteer.

Jesse Oakley, III, says the key to his success in leadership is a constant commitment to self-improvement. He asks, “Is there any way you can be better?” Success is more about a continuing pursuit of self-improvement and growth than it is about competing with others. Jesse Oakley sums up the secret to success: “If you don’t grow, you decay.”
