Ringside Philanthropy: Legendary Boxing Referee Joe Cortez’ Journey of Giving Back

Boxing referee Joe Cortez tells the story of his life and career as a boxer, referee and entrepreneur. He grew up in New York’s Spanish Harlem, the son of Puerto Rican immigrants. He talks about how he became a professional boxing referee and his career as an entrepreneur.

He became a Golden Gloves champion in 1960. Following his retirement, he became a professional referee. He didn’t make it as a fighter but, after six months as a referee, he turned professional. After a year and a half, he refereed at Madison Square Garden and entered the Boxing Hall of Fame as a referee in 2012.

Cortez discussed his career in entrepreneurship and his desire to give back to the community. He started La Mansion, a high-end assisted living facility in Las Vegas. From his days as a fighter and referee to his journey as an entrepreneur, his journey has been one of excellence and giving back to the community.
